| The Staghorn Fern is one of my
favorite plants. Here in Florida we just attach it to a slab of
wood, a metal hanging basket or a tree and leave it alone. The plant
is an epiphyte or an air plant that takes most of it's nourishment from
the air. It has two kinds of frons- a flat fron or a shield that
collects the moisture and food for the plant to live on and a long fron
that resembles a deer anthlers - hinse the name Staghorn. This
plant traveled all the way from Australia, the Phillipines, Malaysia,
Africa and South America to add to our plant enjoyment.
The Staghorn Fern does best in the house
when it is mounted on a rough board. The best way to water the plant
is to plunge the entire plant in a bucket or pot of water that is at room
temperature. Let is soak for about 15 minutes and then let the water
drip out. Feed with 20-20-20 fertilizer 2 or 3 times a year using 1
teaspoon per gallon of water. The plant does not need to be watered
or fertilized during the winter. In Florida when the plants get to
be huge, we sometime sneak a banana peal behind the shield just to add
some potassium
