DIEFFENBACHIA

     Dieffenbachia is a member of the Araceae family with 30 or more species originating from tropical North America and South America.  Commonly called Dumb Cane the leaves and stems are toxic and can cause loss of speech as well as swelling of the lips and mouth.  Usually a compact and bushy plant with leaves that easily break, Dieffenbachia can tolerate low light and dry conditions.  The decorative leaf pattern is very cheerful in artificial light .  As the plant get bigger,  one can cut out the main stalk and root it in another pot before becomes top heavy and unmanageable.
